He finds her trying to bandage a long cut on her side, feebly unscrewing the lid of a hydrogen peroxide bottle and spilling half of it onto the floor, instead of her wound. The towel underneath her is soaked with her blood, and he winces as she sits forward in the rickety office chair to try and clean the whole of it – the soft pink skin is marred all the way around her back.
“Rose,” he says, shaking
“You’re not immortal,”
“I don’t have to be,” she murmurs, finally letting her eyes fall shut against the crook of his elbow. “They just have to think I am."
"That’s why I need you,” she says sleepily. She has a concussion – he’s going to have to set up triage in their living room. “You’ll make them think I’mm bulletproof,” she smiles.
It’s on his lips to deny her everything, before that smile – they’ve come too far, and he thinks, maybe, that those street smarts that kept her alive til now won’t let her keep going out at night, facing the monsters spilling out into the streets of Jasper City.
But as he runs his fingers over her body, finding more cuts and bruises – smaller ones, older ones. He comes, at last to the one on her knee- one that’s covered, but that has been there since she swung on a chain to save him from playground bullies.
She’s never going to stop. “You can do that,” she breathes. “Right? Make them think I can do anything.”
“You can already do anything,” says John, lifting her in a fireman’s carry and placing her gingerly on the sofa.
It could work. The science is iffy, but if anyone could pull it off, he could, and he knows her – knows to the core of his soul that she isn’t going to stop.
“I’m going to do more than that, Rose,” He presses a kiss to her forehead. “I’m going to make you into a goddess."
