Doctor Who 8.01 “Deep Breath”
∟Attack Eyebrows
▬ Table reading // Final cutI find extremely fascinating to behold the differences between the read through and the final cut, as appeared in “Deep Breath”.
When Peter had his first time with those lines, the twinkle in his eyes as Doctor Who is in a raw state; he makes massive use of hands language – it was a table reading, so full body was not available – in order to convey the graspingness of the Twelfth Doctor’s bewilderment.
Instead, in the finale take we plainly see that he doesn’t need over-acting: the expressiveness of his face alone is capable of conveying the multitude of weird, often unpredictable ticks and impulses of the newly regenerated incarnation.
Peter owns those lines, owns his acting and fits his boots (at least metaphorically, since he’s barefoot) filling them with a funny, edgy and really acid sparkle – which was the predominant stanza in the song he composed in his first 60 minutes on screen as the Twelfth Doctor.I really wish Doctor Who Extra could provide more of these moments from table readings, allowing us to compare them with final takes.
Peter Capaldi constantly provides such an interesting material to observe, and I feel so vindicated in my devotion to that.
