I would love this a lot more if they hadn’t just spent the entire first half of this season going “I’m not your boyfriend Clara” and “you might as well flirt with a mountain range” etc

Except, did you perhaps not catch Clara’s epic retort to the mountainrange speech? Or how the very next thing out of his mouth was that he was the one who thought of them as an item and doing a flashy pose with his new outfit? (He basically thought he’d weirded her out/ misjudged his place/expected to much and tried to at least salvage their friendship)

Any relationship is going to have clashes… or move past the “limerence” stage where you’re always flirty and trying to impress each other and reach the point where you’re busy with stuff and clash, or see each other’s edgier bits. It’s not like they weren’t in total denial in s7, but with Eleven being the type to get easily swept away by an impulse… 

No sneakyness involved here, just subtility. They’re complex, stubborn people so of course nothing is ever going to be straightforward with them, and I personally prefer “subtle and complex” to “cheesy and predictable”. 

You know what? Rewatch “Robot of Sherwood”. Watch out for: Jellytasticness (Compare/contrast when Nine met Jack…), arm linking, both being all happy fun around each other early on, narrative parallels to robin/Marian, Robin assuming they’re an item towards the end (“Whoever he is, he’s a very lucky man…”) aaand so on… 

Heck, even “Deep Breath” is basically Vashtra and Jenny, each in their own ways, advising Clara with their experience from their own interspecies relationship, including parallels where we see that Jenny actually gets a bit annoyed at Vashtra’s grandiose arrogant attitude at times, but also how they still love each other.
