As a woman who’s gonna turn 50 in less than two weeks, I find River Song to be a character I can identify with and be thrilled by. She’s sexually active & has a blast! She shoots things! She’s opinionated! She’s fucking awesome! And I enjoyed Eleven’s bittersweet backwards & inside-out romance with her.

I also love Clara Oswald and all her flaws, her anger and her kindness. I think Twelve is utterly madly in love with her and the intensity of this unrealized, un-admitted adoration has made for some of the deepest romantic longing subtext I’ve seen in TV since… well, probably X-Files. We know we’re losing Clara (for the simple sad Doylist reason of Jenna Coleman wanting to move on with her career) and we know Twelve will be gutted.

Twelve also has to get over her some day and get on with his life.

The relationships of semi-immortal time-travelers are probably always going to be messy and tangled and inside-out. And if River helps him get over it, I’m okay with that. It’ll all depend on the details of the plot. I’m ready to enjoy whatever the fuck it is.

And I’m not going to stop writing Whouffaldi fanfic, which is the place where those two will actually admit their love to each other, boink like bunnies, make babies, have more adventures, and have happy endings. Because that’s what fanfiction is for and I know it. Canon is always going to break my heart, because in canon Jenna always has to leave to continue her career.

I will continue to write the odd bit of Twelve x Rose because he went through the same thing with Rose and who knows? probably even some Twelve x River depending on how it works out.

That’s what I’m going to do. And you will not hear one word of character bashing here.
