Ah, Bors. Some might say he’s the true hero of “The Magician’s Apprentice.” Okay, no one would say that, but he is certainly under-utilized. Jontinf’s story expands on the time the Doctor spent with Bors, even before “The Doctor’s Meditation.” It gives a glimpse into Bors’ family life, the missus, and his
1213 kids. Through it all, the Doctor tries to come to terms with his imminent death in the most Doctorish way possible, he teaches Bors how to dance, rejects the advances of a goat, and ends up writing a peculiar sort of love confession/goodbye letter to Clara, which she finds at the end. Clara’s not actually in the fic much, but Bors is very much convinced Clara Oswald of Blackpool is the Doctor’s beloved, and this is probably one of the few things Bors is right about. The story is a laugh a minute, but it also has several surprisingly touching moments.
