   She knows she shouldn’t go. She knows she can’t go to the forest alone. She knows it could cost her life. But she has to know where all the smoke is coming from.
  
Even through they forbid her to ever go alone, Alina decides
to leave the Sanctuary only to find a man, half dead, lying in
the snow. She can’t leave him there to die, so she brings him back.
They tell her how irresponsible and reckless she was, but little she cares about it when she learns the man survived, but a long recovery awaits him.

  
Nikolai is
forever grateful for saving his life, but all Alina cares about is how
he ended up in the forest. He doesn’t answer it, but once he mentions he
is a captain, she wants to know everything. She could listen to his stories all day and night, and he gladly tells her every each of them.

   But as he gets better his presence is
not tolerated

by the leaders of the Sanctuary, even with Alina’s help he has to leave soon. Alina. He couldn’t help but notice the resemblance. What if all the stories were true? What if she is the daughter of the late Queen? But finding it out means he has to leave — with her.
