Peter Capaldi: The winner of this award and I worked together for two years, which
meant that we laughed a lot. Mostly at each other’s misfortune. There was
nothing that I enjoyed more than when a new director would come on to the set,
and being slightly wary of me, I think they would think that they could give
the winner of this award lots of notes.
And I would chortle happily from the wings, watching her being
persecuted. Happy, happy days. But the joke was on me, and on them. Because the
fact was, she needed no notes. Because she has an absolutely wonderful talent,
which is that rarest of combinations. Great thoughtfulness, intelligence, and
deep, deep emotion. Which means that when she acts, she’s smart, spontaneous
and combustible. When she plays a scene, it can go absolutely anywhere. And it
is this huge talent, that she has used to illuminate Victoria, and most
recently has brought us an unforgettable portrait of grief and survival in The
Cry. She’s a great actress, and more than that, she is a great person. She’s kind, she’s generous, she’s truly
gracious. And I will always treasure the time that we had working together. And
I look forward to, hugely, all the many wonderful performances to come. The TV
actress of the year is Jenna Coleman.
