JYN/CASSIAN FIC REC!!!
Ok yall, this series is a doozy but completely worth it. Don’t let the low kudos scare you away from making the time investment because this series is AMAZING. From a technical aspect, it is practically flawless and completely transportive. The characters get new depths and dimensions and the last one in the series is a gut punch that had me crying for about 12 hours from a multitude of emotions (don’t worry, the end is happy but you will EARN those happy feelings).
BUT there is something you need to know: the first in the series, Gray Areas, is written as a self-contained character study of Cassian and follows him through the end of Rogue One as it happened in canon. The rest of the series assumes that Cassian and Jyn were saved at the very last second at Scarif as the only survivors, but is otherwise congruent with the rest of the Gray Areas, though it picks up 6 months after Scarif.
So if you are like me and avoid:
1. Pre-Rogue One Cassian stories
2. Established relationship storiesDo not pass this up! It breaks my heart to see such a great, epic story get so little recognition. There is still plenty of that “falling in love” feeling without fully seeing how they made the leap to get together but more than that, you go on a very realistic, heartbreaking journey (that is also a stunning portrait of the god-damn human-ness of Jyn and Cassian and how family or the lack thereof affects us all) and then at the end, get a wonderfully hopeful ending.
If you are still hesitant, I recommend starting with Chapter 41 of Gray Areas and just continuing the series from there. Some mentions of previous characters will be uninformed but you will get enough to be able to understand where Cassian is coming from to move on to the second in the series which will lay them all out neatly again and in great detail.
