–– Jyn woke up cold. Not an uncommon occurrence on Hoth, but also not normal for her– usually buried under the four layers (one cotton sheet, three bantha-wool blankets) Cassian preferred. But now she was only covered by the sheet– not enough for the frozen hellscape that was Hoth.
She turned to look behind her at Cassian, still asleep and snoring through a cold that had gradually crept up during the week, but had really sunk in its teeth in the last day or so. He had rolled away from her, towards the wall, and in doing so had apparently managed to wrap himself in a burrito using all the wool blankets.
Really? She was reluctant to wake him– he really needed the rest– but she was also kriffing cold.
So she reached out and tugged gently, trying to unwind the blankets without waking their contents.
Come. On. The first one came free pretty easily, and she quickly pulled it around her shoulders, then pressed her hands under her thighs to bring some warmth back into them.
But one wool blanket didn’t quite do the job of three, and soon she was eyeing the second one, still folded around Cassian alone.
This one took a little more work to free, but she managed it. Although she’d barely finished when he snuffled in his sleep and rolled towards the wall again, third trapped blanket even more tightly around him.
Well… whatever. Two should be enough. Jyn tried to settle down again with her half of the sheet and two wool blankets, but to her annoyance found it nearly impossible. Cassian kept shifting away, pulling the blankets up, and there was a constant draft on her right side.
Finally, when the chrono blinked 0251, she decided enough was enough. She just had to free all the blankets once and for all. Taking a breath, she started with the third one.
Just go slow, she thought, tugging it inch by inch from under his body. Don’t rush, and it’ll all be fine.
