Inception Character Mini-Essays: ARIADNE

In honor of Inception Day Week LIFE, I’d like to take a mo’ to give a shout-out to this fierce character.  Aside from being a badass, she’s also integral to the entire execution of the plan — far beyond simply designing the dreams.  The most common complaint I’ve heard about her is that she’s such an obvious plot device since she shares the audience’s POV and, subsequently, is the one asking all of the questions.  And it’s true; one of her primary functions is to help us understand how the cogs and tops and whirligigs of the operation mesh and work together.  But dismissing her role as an expository gimmick is doing her character as a whole a severe disservice.

Ariadne is the only one who consistently calls Cobb out on his bullshit; who insists on prying into the darkest spaces of his mind because she knows that she deserves to know what she’s getting into; who demands to go into the dreamspace pretty much solely for the good of the team.  The only reason the job got done in the end?  Was because she refused to give up.  With Nolan’s tendency to favor men in his leading roles, Ariadne’s autonomy and tenacity proved her more than capable of going toe to toe with the big boys, and that’s why she’s my undisputed favorite. ♥
