Ten is a bored, lonely researcher/librarian Time Lord, still on Gallifrey, and Rose is the curious human adventurer who arrives in a dubiously obtained time machine (she claims she won it in a poker game) to sweep him off his feet and take him out there to live in the universe instead of just sitting back and observing it.
