In the summer of 1882, Doctor John Smith returns to his home village to discover the neighbouring estate has been purchased by a wealthy family recently come into new money. Their daughter, Rose Tyler, is beautiful and well liked by the villagers and John is immediately smitten. When a mysterious illness leaves her with strange bruises and long hours of missing gaps in her memory, the Tylers ask the Doctor for help diagnosing her condition…only for him to find that her injuries and memory loss stem from the fact that something in the house doesn’t seem to like her.
