wow but honestly the insane difference between the doctor’s “not everything is avoidable” speech to river and breaking into gallifrey after four and a half billion years and murdering someone for clara……
like i hate to be that person but honestly
by the way, I’m not saying that he doesn’t love river. but i do think there is a difference between people you love & people you can’t live without. and i think the difference between clara and everybody else is that she was the intersection of both.
Or perhaps he has learnt from his experience with Clara that what he did in Hell Bent wasn’t the right path? Look, I love 12/Clara and the bond they shared but let’s not romanticize what the Doctor did for and because of Clara at the end of series 9. It wasn’t romantic or good, it was fucking crazy and the realisation of that cost him his memories of Clara. But while he has forgotten the details about Clara he remembers the lessons she taught him and this was one of them. Happily ever after doesn’t mean forever, it just means time. And in the end the memories of 24 years beats not remembering.
lmao wow ok let’s dissect this. first of all this post was only tagged whouffaldi so really no reason for this response but that’s tumblr
this is a vast, incredible universe. we are dealing with characters who do extraordinary things for each other, for worlds, for strangers, for themselves. for love. because of love. because of empathy and passion and because they can. love is one of the core values of this entire show.
i think what the doctor did in hell bent is exactly the right path. did he go too far? absolutely. does that mean he was wrong for doing what he did? not at all. i fully believe the universe is better off with clara in a tardis, saving it, and i’d bet a lot of money on us seeing the effects of that at points in time throughout the next season or so.
not romanticize it? so we don’t romanticize grand gestures anymore? how about everything rose did? almost tearing apart time and space crossing dimensions? but that’s romantic. because this is the kind of show doctor who is. the characters do incomprehensible things for love.
so yeah, what the doctor did in both heaven sent and hell bent was romantic. it was wildly intense and outrageous and insane, but he loved her. he couldn’t live without her. he couldn’t bear to lose her. that’s why he did what he did. it was a level of love we’ve literally never seen from him before. he went farther than he ever has for her, and he had to forget – not because he went too far, but because he never would have stopped! that was the point. he didn’t learn. it wasn’t about him learning a lesson. he’s had plenty of people he’s loved that he didn’t almost destroy the universe for. this was particular to clara. because they were the hybrid. they never would have stopped.
and for the record, because i’m annoyed, the doctor has had how many years to think about ways to save river? this isn’t like a new thing, her death. he’s had all the time in the world to come up with something. he just didn’t. because like i said originally, there’s a difference between people you love & people you can’t live without.
