A long time ago, Coruscant was the veritable center of a galaxy far, far away: the seat of the Senate, the site of the Jedi Temple, the epitome of culture both high and low. The sprawling cityscape that covered the planet divided the world into layers: the upper levels were home to aristocracy, democracy, and conspiracy, while the lower Underworld seethed with gossip, danger, and suspicious characters with names like Elan Sleazebaggano.
